Suzy Shapiro

Suzy began her practice of Yoga and Pranayama in 1977 when she realized her past physical injuries were interfering with her ability to function well, reduce pain and enjoy her life. She studied with the available teachers in Houston at that time, Billie Golnick, Lex Gillan and Robert Boustany. Then George Purvis brought Iyengar Yoga to Houston in 1984. It was exactly what she needed and it changed her life for the better. She became a Certified Iyengar Yoga Instructor, Level 2, in 1991.

Suzy has taught in corporate settings and assisted living facilities as well as teaching Level 1 and 2 classes. She founded The Yoga Association of Houston in 1985, hosted a website where Houston yoga teachers could list their credentials and their classes, and held two yoga conferences offering a variety of approaches to yoga and pranayama. She has presented the benefits of Iyengar Yoga at two conferences hosted by M D Anderson. And she taught at the Teas Yoga Retreat every year for its first dozen years.

She brings a sense of joy, appreciation, and practical experience into every class along with the focus, proper intelligent action and alignment for each student which is the core of the Iyengar approach.

Insights & Adventures
Iyengar yoga was developed by B.K.S Iyengar over 75 years ago in Pune, India. It is known for its emphasis on technique, alignment and form in the asanas, philosophy largely based on Patanjali, and the practice of Pranayama. The use of props such as blocks, blankets, bolsters and straps to make every pose accessible to every student began with Mr. Iyengar. Props inform and enhance our experiences in asana to allow us to focus the mind and spirit in the moment to create a focused effort that is both safe and challenging. This approach meets us where we are and moves us forward. Our Sunday Morning class will focus primarily on standing and seated poses. I may adjust you physically, with your permission. Please let me know if you have any limitations that may require modification in some poses.
