Hansa Knox Johnson

Hansa has practiced yoga for over forty-five years. She has been sharing the classical expression of yoga, opening a door for students to dive deeper into the practice that is changing their lifes. Her belief is yoga begins when you leave the mat, and, integrating awareness of “what is happening” on a subtle level can invite a student inquiry about “what is happening to me.” She has been teaching yoga, yoga teacher trainings and an accredited yoga therapy course, beginning in 1988. She continue to study and learn . . . and beyond workshops, students are my teacher!

Hansa owns Gentle Touch Body Mind and Spirit Connection dba PranaYoga and Ayurveda Mandala. Amazing teachers have helped her develop a keen insight into the collaboration of the Body, Mind, and Spirit. Her studies include Kripalu yoga, yoga therapy, therapeutic bodywork, body Reading, āyurveda, vedic chanting, jyotiśa, health education, homeopathy, and ministry to facilitate Spirit connection.

When not on the mat, she chants, re-imagines her yard and attends the theater. Her greatest dream is to have time to turn her training manuals into books based on unique insights learned and matured over the years.

The Art of Yoga Therapy
It takes a specific skill set to be a yoga teacher:  integrating a tridoṣa class, language and adaptations for multiple levels of students and more.  Being a yoga therapist requires a different set of skills.  How do we “read the body.?”  How do we personalize each practice for one person or a small group with a common health goal?  To support your goal of being a yoga therapist requires additional education because if you know yoga, yoga therapy unfolds from within.   Picking a school that will support your style, or your chosen population as a yoga therapist, may be a challenge.  In this interactive discussion, we will explore these principles and discuss the art of yoga therapy.

Āsana Names Matter: Saṁskṛt, Language of the Body (IAYT-CE)
And Śiva said, “These postures, āsana, energize the body, revealing the pulsating animal instincts within, the ones that have to be brought under control.  He revealed the secret of breath manipulation, pranayama, of controlling the movement of live-giving-energy, prāṇa enabling the mind to expand beyond the narrow confines of the body.” Many people ask, why learn the saṁskṛt names of āsana.  It does matter.  Saṁskṛt is the vibration of the body.  In this workshop we will review the alphabet and then apply the movement of the letters to the names of āsana.  We will discuss the metaphors for chosen āsana and how to use āsana names to language through the kośa in a yoga class.
